Darwin
February 12, 2008 on 10:49 am | In Travels | Comments OffWow! Time goes too quickly around these parts. It was two weekends ago now that we finally managed to get a break from work and decided to head up to Darwin for some shopping and relaxation.
We didnt have long (4 days) and Darwin being about 800kms away we didnt want to stuff around driving, so the poor Troopy had to content with my (and Anneliese’s) heavy foot for the journey. We averaged 112km/hr which is waay above normal for us and we had a top speed of 140km/h….incredible for the poor troopy.
We ran the first 300kms on Bio Diesel that I had made here. Unsure of how it would go, we did notice a slight problem at about the 100km mark that lasted for about 100kms (slight hesitation at times) but once that went it never came back and I believe we got better power and economy from the bio diesel than from normal diesel.
In Darwin we stayed at a Big4 caravan resort. We are pretty happy with these resorts and being members they really arent too badly priced either. Although this time we splurged a little bit and got a cabin with a spa in it….yay! hehe
At the resort they had this trampoline type thing, its basically a big blowup pillow sunk into the ground…so of course we both had to have a go, luckily for me, I was quickest to get the camera and so the photos showing the trampoline are all of Anneliese…yay!
We got in touch with family while in Darwin and met up with Darron, Andrew, Shannon and Michelle and thier kids. They were nice enough to invite us around for dinner and we had a great catch up. Thanks guys for the evening and for helping us out, we had a really nice time and hope we can do it again soon.
On the saturday we went to some markets…I just love the markets in Darwin and had to show Anneliese, so we went along and ate HEAPS of food until we were near sick. Then had to head into the city for some shopping. I wanted to get a new lense for the camera and Anneliese needed some clothes.
We really liked walking around Darwin city. Its a nice place and quite friendly. There are some great Aboriginal art stores in the main street that we would liked to have spent more time in, but unfortunately we didnt have a whole lot of that so we had to cut it short.
While checking out the city we did get some appreciation of what the locals thought of the local art scene on the window of one shop we found the following message
hehe, how could I resist.
After walking around the city for a while we headed out to the Cullen Bay marina for a look, we had heard that there were some nice restaurants there and so we thought we would see which took our fancy for dinner that night.
While wandering around we saw this beautiful new Hayabusa. Latest model and bloody beautiful. I drooled over it for a while and took a few pictures, then we figured since the person who owned it had good taste, we better cool ourselves off with a drink from the bar it was parked outside of
So we wander into this bar and see two people sitting at a table with thier helmets next to them. I go up to say “gudday, mind if I steal your bike” and realise I know the guy. He was on the Postie Bike Challenge that Anneliese and I went on in 2004. Will and I spent a bit of time riding and drinking together when Anneliese came off her bike. So we had a good chat and caught up a little on the past few years. He even let me sit on the bike and start it…I showed enormous willpower and didnt steal it.
Oh and I have to mention. The bar we went into had a glass urinal in the mens toilet. You pee on the glass which is positioned right in the middle of the bar and restaurant area, so you can see everyone in the bar just about. Luckily though they cant see you, its a one way mirror thing. But a pretty cool idea and of course I had to get Anneliese in there to check it out as well (she didnt pee on it though and thats half the fun).
So after a chat with them we headed back to the cabin to freshen up ready for dinner. We decided on a smorgasboard place at Cullen Bay that had a great view of the sunset. The food there was pretty bloody good, I had great company and the view was just lovely. I had to call mum at that point just to rub it in :)
On our way out of there we found a car that really was in the spirit of Australia Day
hehe, good on ‘em.
The next day we went to another market and stuffed ourselves again (Mango and Nutella Pancake with cream…mmmmm). Then did a whole heap of grocery (and alcohol) shopping (yes, we have a permit) ready for our trip home the next day.
The drive home was uneventful and we did pretty good time. Stopped at Top Springs for lunch and found that the food there is pretty bloody good, the people are really nice and we will have to make a point of stopping there next time we head out of Laj.
OOPS!
February 12, 2008 on 10:18 am | In Travels | Comments OffSorry to anyone that has tried to view our photos of Darwin recently. I uploaded them quickly when we got home and I hadnt checked them at all until just now, when I realised that some of them hadnt been reduced.
Its all been taken care of now and should be much easier for you all to view and load.
